In an effort to pretend that I have a life outside of my dog, I am going to write nondog-related posts on Saturdays. So now you don’t have to be confused if you were expecting to read a post on dogs. There will be plenty of time for dogs.

I want to challenge everyone to totally give up TV for 30 days. In the past two years, the only TV I’ve watched is while working out at the gym or when I’m at someone’s house and everyone else is watching it. Now that I’ve been without it for so long, I doubt I’ll ever go back. It actually bothers me to watch it, with all the noise, the in-your-face advertising and the way news channels feed us what they want us to hear. I still rent movies twice a month or so, but I can honestly say I don’t miss TV at all. It is not a part of my life anymore and I don’t notice it’s gone.

The most valuable part of life without TV is I’m able to be more productive. Even without TV, there still doesn’t seem to be enough time each day to accomplish everything. I can’t imagine wasting hours watching reality shows. In the past two years I have read more books than ever before. I work out more, clean and organize more, cook better meals and spend more time talking and doing things with my boyfriend, friends and family.

Since being without TV, I’ve become more aware of all areas of my life. Not only am I more aware of how I spend my time, but I eat healthier. I follow a consistent workout schedule and financial budget. I take time to write and rewrite a list of goals. I plan better and feel happier and more in control of my life.

A minor benefit to eliminating TV is I save money by not paying a cable bill. At one point I was paying $80 a month for cable. I’m sure some people pay even more than that. Having this extra money to spend or save every month was one of the original reasons I canceled my cable service. But now that I’m used to it, this isn’t a reason anymore. It’s just nice to know I’m saving this money every month or spending it on more important things.

You should try going without TV for a month. See if you notice any of these differences. I hope you decide to cancel your cable or satellite connection as well.

I gave up tv several years ago and when I moved here, I didn’t even bother to hook it up. There is life without TV although I think my computer has replaced it in many ways.

I need to start that. I can count endless nights that I fall asleep on the couch in front of the boob tube. Thank of all I’d get done :)

we have been with out television for two and a half years!
We have a great tv- and we netflix our shows now, and we also watch shows on the internet.
But i whole heartedly agree, television is a WASTE!
Although I do wish we could subscribe to channels, i would get discovery channel and hgtv.
    i’d be set.
