Dog lovers always want more dogs.

There are days when I want to adopt a second dog. And fostering a dog or cat is always in the back of my mind. I have to remind myself I work 10-hour shifts, I don’t give my mutt and cat enough time as it is, and I’m trying to save money, not spend more. But there’s always that place in my heart that wants to help a homeless pet. Maybe when I have a house and a yard or at least a bigger apartment I can get another pet.

But really, at what point does a person have too many animals? It really depends on the kind of care they are getting. For the person who keeps her dog kenneled 23 hours a day, one dog is probably too many. But for someone with enough space, time and money, 20 dogs might be just fine.

My dog’s previous owner gave him up because she felt she had too many animals in her home with two dogs and a cat, and that was the right choice for her.

In an extreme example, 796 chihuahuas, terriers and other dogs were recently seized from an elderly couple’s filthy mobile home in rural Arizona. According to the Associated Press, the couple owned the dogs, apparently hoarding them because they felt no one else could give them a good home.

I’m not sure these dogs were getting a good home. Some of them were missing paws from dogfights or from getting them caught in their cages, the AP said. Filth covered the home. They did, however, have enough food.

If only properly caring for a dog meant giving it enough food. One dog or five dogs, the reason I only have one is because I can’t offer another dog the quality of life I would want to give it. I’m sure there will be more dogs in my future, but for now, I have to help out homeless animals in other ways.

My owners only have me. I’m pretty lucky to be an only dog, in my opinion. I have lots of friends and that’s fine with me but at the end of the day I’m king of the yard and I like it that way! You can read about my life at http://www.lifeofoscar.com

Our home is almost t0o small for the four of us. Our goal for when we move to a bigger house, and hopefully my husband can be a stay at home-husband- we’d like to get a third- hopefully foster dog.
However in our county 3 dogs is the maximum allowed. I don’t know how well this law is enforced, but I don’t really want to find out.

I know what you mean. We have 3 dogs and two cats, and yet every time I’m in the humane society shelter to renew the pets’ tags, I’m so tempted by all the animals there. I’ve learned to not visit the dogs, because I’d be taking them all home, and I’ve already got as many as my husband and I can handle.

I’d love to have a big property some day and start a shelter for elderly dogs and cats. It just breaks my heart to see them in the shelter.

We just don’t have the ability to have pets in our complex. If I could I would have a big ass dog.

796 dogs in one house??? Crazy!!

I do know what you mean though - I think everyone can relate. Any pet owner/animal lover just melts when presented with the opportunity to take in another.

One woman at work has a desk full of cat memorabilia, and pictures of her cats, then she gets offended when people compare her to the Cat Lady from The Simpsons. The resemblance is striking, though!!
