Today was day 14 of my 30-day challenge to walk Ace every day. He has backtracked a little bit. He was not as responsive on our walk today and kept sneaking ahead. He was less interested in the treats I offered, and he did poorly at sits and stays during agility class tonight. Then again, Ace worked on off-leash heeling during our backpacking trip, and he did really well, at least once he got tired!
For the rest of this week, I am going to try a few things. I will use different treats, maybe some cheese or jerky. Ace and I will walk near other dogs purposely, so he can practice walking calmly with distractions. Until now, I’ve been avoiding other dogs. For five minutes during the middle of our walk, we will go over the basic commands such as sit, down, stay, stand and come. I will have to work on really making a big deal when he does something right, because he has been tuning me out when I keep nagging at him to heel.

Do you think he might be a little sore from the backpacking trip? I have found that sometimes when they are a little off, it’s a good idea to change up to some other activity for a few days.

He probably is sore. You are right, a break from his usual activity will do him some good. Thanks.
