I realised quickly she could smell the beach long before I got there, then she gets excited. So Ive taught her to sit while I unlock the back tray of car, then once she jumps out she sits while I lock it and get her lead in hand... My youngest boy Trooper (not quite 2 y.o.) is very good (usually) when I say "stay" before opening the door and making sure I have his leash in hand. The other two...oh Lord. It's like a whirlwind. We were sloppy trainers for the first two kiddos. It's always amazed me when I see a dog leap out of the car with traffic nearby - rest areas especially. When I get a foster or a new dog (I have 2 new dogs right now) and they don't know how to wait yet, I'm always worried they will jump out of the car in a dangerous place.
