Note: This is a guest post from Apryl DeLancey, who writes the blog “Women Like Sports.” Yes, this post is about cats, but if you’re like me, you probably own a dog and a cat. Yeah, not only is my kitty named Freako, but he walks on a leash! It really was a natural progression [...]

I began walking dogs last fall at the Natural Pet Center in Fargo, which also keeps dogs from 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. The sad thing is, although I haven’t been there since Thanksgiving, some of the same dogs still sit there, waiting to be walked every day. These dogs waited in their kennels all winter, [...]

Last weekend I took care of Piper, my friend Becky’s great dane. I wanted to show a picture of her because I had never seen a gray and black (blue merle) great dane before Piper. Piper reminds me of how some of the American Kennel Club’s regulations are a bit ridiculous. The AKC recognizes the [...]

When dogs used for fighting are taken out of their abusive situations, they should be given a chance to live a normal life. According to CNN, 47 pit bulls were taken from property owned by Michael Vick. All the dogs went to animal rehabilitation centers. The hope is that with time, some of them will [...]

My mutt isn’t allowed to go to rugby practices anymore. He gets too excited, thinks he is the starting outside center and doesn’t like to sit on the sidelines. And he can’t get enough of that odd-shaped ball. I don’t think anyone has seen me do it, but sometimes I take my rugby ball out to a baseball [...]

How many have had any training at all? That alone should motivate you to train your dog better. When it comes to training [...]

Today was the second day of my experiment to walk Ace every day. Since it is really wet and muddy out, he did not get a chance to run today. His walk was his only exercise, so we went for two 20-minute walks, and he wore his dog backpack filled with some books. Ace practiced sitting [...]

When I adopted Ace last year, I debated whether or not to take him to formal obedience classes. I am always trying to save money, so one question I asked myself was “Why pay for training when I know how to train him myself?” My boyfriend, Josh, said, “Does he even need it?” This made [...]

Today was the first day of my 30-day experiment to walk Ace for a minimum of 20 minutes per day. The walk went way better than normal because I brought treats along. All he had to do to get a treat from me today was look at me when I said his name. This kept [...]

When I’m at the dog park or when I meet another dog anywhere, I make sure not to feed it treats without asking the owner first. There are reasons I don’t feed other people’s dogs unless I know it’s OK. Feeding a dog will only encourage the dog to beg for human food or more [...]
