That's a good point. I find that most dog owners call ELECTRONIC fences ELECTRIC fences, but we are incorrect.

I think your title "10 reasons to buy an electric fence" is misleading..

it should be,, "10 reasons to buy an ELECTRONIC fence"

electric fencing is commonly known as a hot wire,, when it gets touched, it shocks..it's been used for many years..

whereas an electronic fence has to have a collar to work....

Thank you for your comment and for sharing your experience. Something psychologically made your dog afraid, not the shock itself. It's unfortunate that he became that scared.

Well what happened was my Adult dog was in our yard i was playing catch with him and he accidently ran out of the boundaries. He got shocked and was so scared he didn't even go outside for a month. He was a big dog he was a doberman pinscher. And when he finally did go outside he wouldn't even leave the deck. And as soon like a little static shock he went running inside poor little dog thats why with my new dog im juust going to use a visible fence.

Thanks for the scoop on elect fences. Now I see that it really will help me keep my Jack Russell safely inside the $3000 6ft wooden fence I already have. She can dig out to chase a lizard in about 3 seconds. So poo on those of you who think it's a lazy man's babysitter. She's too fast & too small for me to get to her in time. Her collar is the first thing out of reach! I don't have the free time & energy that she has, so now she can sit out there chasing & watching lizards all day while I do boring stuff like wash dishes, vacuum, work-at-home. It'll be much better than making her stay inside!

Glad to see someone speak reasonably about an electric fence.
Great tool when used properly

Well, we'd love to be able to try an electric fence but I've been told by several breeders and owners of Huskies and Malamutes that it's a little bit more challenging for these breeds. They're supremely stubborn and will go right through. We may someday try it as a backup to a regular fence though. Although Lora is right in that it won't keep other animals out. We do have a few stray dogs roaming around here who I wouldn't trust at all.

I think they work well for smaller dogs but people probably shouldn't allow their dogs to be outside without supervision or at least someone being home. I know a local DJ had his dog stolen out of his own yard! The dog didn't leave - but the invisible fence doesn't keep people out. (He did get the dog back eventually...but very scary!).

Not a fan of this but to each his own. My dog has a metal electric fence and that is from good training.

I never tried this with my dog but I had a friend that did. It was always fascinating how the dogs would follow us all the way to the invisible line and stop.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but I HATE electric fences. Almost everyone in our neighborhood has one and they leave their dogs out unattended with them. They charge up to the property line when we walk by absolutely raising cane.

Although it will keep a dog in.. it wont keep dangers out... like kids and other animals.

Just my 2 cents.
