I live in Fargo, ND. My dog has hair as short as a Boston terrier's. If I did not walk him every day in the winter, that would be lazy.

I understand the litter box method works out for you and your dogs. Although, I can only imagine what it's like to live with two under-exercised Boston terriers.

It's a good idea to give your dog an option to use a dedicated spot for the bathroom. We have two boston terriers and we live in MN now. They can't stand the cold - even when we dress them up to go outside (our dogs' hair is shorter than my eye lashes).

Anyway, they are now trained to go in a litter box. We bought a dog litter box from petsmart and use kitty litter. Out dogs do very well with this. I must say, cleaning the litter box is less gross than cleaning the toilets we use (hate that task).

But before you judge... you have to experience it... I'm afraid you may be jumping the gun on this one.

Yes Lindsay, it is such a hard choice. But, I guess dogs need love too. I have never purchased an animal from a pet store. I've always had mutt's, they were always healthy and then they got old and died. This is unbelievable to me. The pet store claims that they have had a relationship with the breeder for years, who, by the way is local and they claim that they have not seen this in their animals. Overall she is a healthy girl. Gaining weight normally, eats, plays and is very very affectionate. I have to say, we went to the pet store to play with the pets and she stole my heart. Thanks again for being a sound board for me, I really appreciate your caring and not only in my situation. You have a nice sight.

You have a hard choice to make about keeping the dog. There is no right or wrong answer. I'm sorry you and your family and the dog have to deal with this.

I'm glad you called that pet store. Unfortunately, this is a good example of why people should be cautious when buying puppies from pet stores. Did you notice I did not even have to ask where you got her?

Thanks Lindsay! I have informed the pet store. They said they would refund all of my money if it were in fact a hereditary problem and they would adopt her out to someone else. The sad thing is, each day that goes by, we love her that much more. It really stinks for us because I'm pretty sure we're stuck with her, could not emotionally wreck her, she is way to sweet. My husband wants to return her but he is attached too.

Also, make sure to call the pet store you got her from and make sure they are aware of this dog's medical problems.

Well this is a totally different issues since your dog has a medical problem. I hope she gets better soon, poor girl. Does the vet know what's wrong? Perhaps you should get a second opinion if it doesn't clear up soon? I do think the indoor grass would be good for her if she physically can't hold it. But, remember you will have to train her to use it the same way you would train her to go outside. She won't instinctively know to go on it.

I am struggling with this as well. My puppy (mini dashchund) was born June 15, 2009, we got her August 25, from the beginning, had the hardest time getting her to relieve herself outside. I continued with the treats and the praise when she DID go outside, but too many times she goes in the house. I've had her to the vet a few times, I noticed that her urine smelled strong, I had him test it and sure enough, she has a UTI...okay, no problem right? Wrong...she also has crystals in her urine which is very painful for a puppy or anyone for that matter, imagine peeing glass (YUCK). I've had her on antibiotics and some other medication to control the crystals, had her back today and nothing has changed. I feel really bad for her, its impossible to train her, she goes in little spurts then all of the sudden, she pees a river. I have a pen in my kitchen to keep her in when I'm feeding the kids and getting them ready for school or if I have to run out, I put her in there. Most of the time she goes in the pen which is easy to clean up with the enzymes but I'm thinking of perhaps putting the fake grass in there so she can atleast consistently go there until this clears up, if it ever does. I feel so bad for this girl and I hate to yell at her, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! Part of me wants to return her but we have become so attached to her, not only would my kids be devastated, I would too! HELP

Suit yourself. I find it hard to believe your dogs can't be outside for two minutes to go to the bathroom. But I know what you mean. Sometimes grass is not close by. I am spoiled.
