Working with Trooper and Agility has done WONDERS for his skills at laying down and staying. In class when I need to walk a course I can reliably put him in a down and he will stay as long as it takes me to get it. It's really wonderful. Only one or two times has he actually gotten up before called or given permission.

It really is rewarding to work with a dog and have them focus so much on you that they watch and listen and do what you ask. It's a wonderful partnership! =)

Now if I can only work to do the same with Timber.

I like to teach my dogs two commands, one being "stay" which is more formal, for use in Obedience. I want them to know that this is part of "working". I also like to teach a "settle" behavior which is less formal. It would be what I would use in general places where it would be ok for them to shift around or chew on a bully stick, etc., but that they should remain in that general spot.

We have pretty solid stays with the girls, but like you said, it depends on the situation.

One thing that was invaluable to me when I was training stays was something that my dog trainer (aka handler trainer LOL!) said..

you can increase time or you can increase distance.. but dont' increase both at the same time while training.

It's true that we are often, as humans, tempted to see HOW far or HOW long our dog will stay.. but the important part is building in success... to test your dog's stay before she is ready is to set him up for failure.

SewCrazyDogLadys last blog post..I may have to start making these on a regular basis

The down stay can fix so many behavior problems. A dog can't beg at the table, annoy visitors, or run around the house like crazy if he is lying down. Great post.

I get such a kick out of watching the police dogs lying so quietly when there is paper work and then springing into action. My dogs just do whatever Misty the alpha Poodle does and she is pretty good at stay.

We are working on this now. My big dude has a mind of his own and likes attention so he'd rather come give you slobber than stay at times. He's coming along though!
