I’m trying to develop a habit of complimenting people on their dogs’ behavior. Not their appearance, size or breed, but their behavior. Like with everything else, people are much more likely to compliment or criticize a dog’s appearance rather than her behavior. Just take a Staffordshire terrier to the dog park and watch people back [...]

We are currently in a blizzard. The wind chill temp is -38 degrees (2 p.m. update, -42 degrees) right now in Fargo, and no driving is advised for the entire state of North Dakota. Ace and I ventured outside for about five minutes before we decided to go back in. He was not happy he [...]

My mutt Ace drives me crazy if he hasn’t had enough physical and mental exercise. He needs to run around and play, but he also needs work to do. Mental challenges help him get rid of pent-up energy, fight boredom and leave him tired! Different breeds need different jobs, so here are some ideas to [...]

One of my goals for this loose-leash walking challenge was to be able to take my dog out in all situations without a pinch collar or Gentle Leader and have him under control. To me, under control means Ace is not pulling, whining, choking himself or fixating on another dog or person. Before this challenge, [...]

Note: This is a guest post from Apryl DeLancey who writes the blog “Women Like Sports.” Gus is a big dog. His breed is large but he’s got a few extra pounds and is somewhere around 120 pounds. Gus was at the Norco, Calif., shelter for somewhere in the neighborhood of two years. The poor [...]
