Many pet owners do not consider pet insurance until a pressing medical treatment is facing them. It is only at this point, when the cost of the treatment is far higher that the pet owner can afford, that the benefits of pet insurance become obvious. It is often a traumatic and difficult experience when a pet owner has to choose between the life of their pet over the cost of getting their pet back to health.

I tried to get pet insurance for my collie, but she was found as a stray and had heartworms when I adopted her, so the burden of proof for preexisting conditions was pretty high. If you are sitting ok financially it probably isn’t worth it. There is always that chance that something is going to cost a ton. And it would be nice to have at that time. Yeah like I said tough call. I would never say it is not a smart thing to have. Pet health policies are similar to human insurance policies; annual premiums, deductibles, and various coverage based upon what the owner chooses. Most plans also have co-pays and caps that limit how much will be paid out anually. Thanks for sharing..

Thanks for this great information! Very informative, and I think you have answered the question I was looking for. I have a 10 year old dog with pre-existing condition, so I think I'm out of luck on getting insurance for her. Especially on my social security income! Thanks again.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up! Pet insurance is a good option for some, but make sure to do your research first!

Pet insurance has been increasing in popularity recently, due in large part to the advances of veterinary science. Vets today can offer treatments and procedures that were unheard of just a few years ago, such as radiation therapy, transplants, and MRIs. However, these new treatments are not cheap; veterinary costs have risen over 70% in the past five years, to over $19 billion last year.

Pet health policies are similar to human insurance policies; annual premiums, deductibles, and various coverage based upon what the owner chooses. Most plans also have co-pays and caps that limit how much will be paid out anually.

Items to be aware of:

Some policies won't cover older pets
Certain breeds are excluded from coverage
Pre-existing conditions are normally excluded
Most insurers offer a multi-pet discount

Policy costs vary widely, depending on the animal and the different packages that the owner can choose. Some packages are comprehensive, including such things as annual checkups and vaccinations, spaying/neutering, death benefits and even reimbursement for offering a reward for lost pets. Other plans cover only accidents and illness.

I tried to get pet insurance for my collie, but she was found as a stray and had heartworms when I adopted her, so the burden of proof for preexisting conditions was pretty high (had to prove no heart damage through xrays, etc). As it turns out she's almost nine and she's been very healthy the whole time I've had her. I never did get the insurance but I am financially able to care for her medical needs now out of pocket if something happened (and now for our mutt too!).
