Just wanted to mention that a documentary called “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” is on at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. (CST) on BBC America Thursday night (Dec. 10).
The documentary investigates the genetic diseases and other health problems in pedigree dogs, according to bbcamerica.com.
I expect the documentary to be quite graphic, sickening and sad, but well worth the watch if you call yourself a dog lover. One of the examples listed in the documentary description includes Cavalier King Charles spaniels with heads too small for their brains.
Let me know if you catch the documentary and what your thoughts are on the issue.
Thanks Meredith for bringing this to my attention.

I think the RR is mentioned there. I would love to see it, but will have to wait until I’m back in Sweden again…
I will be watching it once it’s available online.
Hi Lindsay,
Would you kindly update us when you find it online. I would really like to see it, considering the implications. Twitter perhaps?
Thanks,
Omar
I saw an ad for this yesterday. We don’t have access to TV at home, so I’ll have to wait until it’s available online as well.
Glad I’m not the only one who chooses not to have TV! When I find it online, I’ll let people know!
The whole thing can be found in six parts on dailymotion.com.
I’ve been watching it on YouTube. It is extremely sad.
I agree.
For all those who are looking for it online, I watched it a few weeks ago on Youtube – the full thing was up there in a few different parts.
I found the documentary fascinating. And while I know there are responsible breeders out there, it really highlights the problem with the official breed standard systems and how far -some- breeders will go to win some ribbons.
Thanks Liza. And your new site looks great!
Hi Lindsay,
Thanks for the heads up on the documentary;I saw it and was totally shocked. They had German Shepherds that could barley walk due to hip problems and the dogs were considered prime examples of their breed by the Royal Kennel Club. Here in Oklahoma we are one of the worst states for puppy mills and sadly many people are getting dogs with a lot of genetic problems.
Yeah, it is very sad what goes on. I’m glad you were able to watch the documentary.
I watched it some time ago… my dog’s breeder in Sweden actually sent me a link to it. It’s very sad. I guess some of the breeders are just out to make money and don’t care enough about their dogs. Ugh. I’m glad to have my Danish Swedish Healthy Farmdog!
I’m glad you watched it. You are very lucky to have your healthy pup! I know you put in the time to make sure you were getting your dog from a quality breeder.
