Yeah, labs sometimes have a bad rap as being out of control. Really, labs can be quite lazy and are willing to spend hours napping at their owner's feet. Remember, these are the dogs that will wait patiently for hours to retrieve a single duck. They are also great service dogs. All it takes is consistent exercise and leadership as you have done.

This post had a lot of great information. I see a lot of people get dogs that aren't right for their family lifestyle. I have a lab that is going on 6 years old. He was six months old and had already been in four homes when I adopted him. The problem - extremely high energy and lack of any type of training. Once I got him exercising and channeled the energy, he was a piece of cake to train. Please keep up the good work, both of you!

I agree that owning or adopting a dog is not as simple as bringing them in at home. It's a responsibility and a constant effort to raise them properly like kids. Thanks for this nice post :)

I couldn't agree more. I will always have at least one "rescued" dog. I spent about two months finding Ace. He ended up being the perfect dog for me, not by coincidence but because I looked for the right dog that would fit in well with my lifestyle, my cat and work schedule at the time.

I am so glad to hear that they did their research on breeds and the general needs of all dogs before making the commitment of pet ownership. My family also spent a couple of months researching breeds before we picked a mini schnoodle. It is also important to research breeders if you don't get one from a rescue. The only thing I would do differently is adopting from a rescue rather than getting from a breeder. Our dogs are wonderful, but at the time, we were relatively inexperienced dog owners and felt more comfortable with trying to reduce any potential issues that can come from a dog with an unknown background. Now that we have two dogs, and feel very comfortable with training and dog behavior, we will adopt our next dog after we decide on the breed.
I wish every family put forth the effort in choosing a breed that suits their family type, and made sure they were familiar with what their dog will need for a happy healthy life.
