“What I love about my pits is that they have no idea the rest of the world thinks they’re ‘dangerous’ or ‘scary.’ I’ve got 2 great dogs that happen to fit the ‘pit’ identity – although those crazy dog DNA tests actually show a much wider variety than most would expect.

“I’m lucky enough to work from home and get to spend the majority of my time with these crazy co-workers.”

Apryl DeLancey & Nami

Apryl and her pitbull Nami

“I love my pibble because she is the sweetest girl that seems to believe that she is my actual child. She sleeps in the bed with me & hubby, tries to corral us all into the same room of the house to be together, and is completely in love with her bloodhound sister.

“She’s very snuggly and is usually found up against me, my husband, or her sister Allie. Oh yeah, she also LOVES to wear clothes every day.”

Nami has her own Facebook page, Allie & Nami.

Kevin Nelson & Guffman

Kevin and Guffman

“My pit, Guffman, is one of the nicest dogs I’ve met. He’s friendly to humans and dogs alike – if anyone or thing is down to play, I KNOW he’s gonna play. Plus, he likes jumping on things, when commanded, which is funny!”

Beth Nydick & Spike

Beth and Spike

“Spike has the biggest heart and most of all, loyalty. He stays close to me at all times to protect and care for me. His funny sense of humor and underbite is what I love most about my pitbull. Can’t you see why we call him Spike?”

Craig Vanderslice & Macha

Craig and Macha

“I love that my pitbull is loyal and loving. She greets me enthusiastically when I get home every day and is a wonderful companion.”

Katy Hansen & Belle

Katy and Belle

“I love my pit because I always have someone to welcome me home with kisses when I walk through the door.”

Hansen is the marketing & communications manager for Animal Care Centers of New York City.

Leon Scott Baxter & Lucy

Leon Scott Baxter and his pitbull

“Lucy is so incredibly loving. We got her as a rescue at four months and I didn’t want to bring a pitbull into the home because we have two daughters. Yet, she is the most loving, patient and loyal dog I have ever had – I’ve had over 30 during my life.

“She’s also the smartest dog I have ever had: easy to train, loves mental challenges, and learns at times without specifically being trained. Adopting her was such an incredibly good choice!”

Laura Funderburk & Bruce

Laura and Bruce

“Bruce is a loving, laid-back dog, who has actually calmed the nature of my more high-strung dog, a cattle dog.

“I like the way he always dances after breakfast. He knows that after he gets his treats, it is time to go for a walk, so he ‘dances.’

“His hugs. Bruce has the best hugs.”

Brian Garrido & Holly

Brian and Holly

“What don’t I love about my dog? She is so expressive in her feelings. I know exactly what she wants and needs with her eyes. She knows she’s a dog and she loves being a canine. She loves that experience of it. OMG, and when she smiles? Who knew that a dog smiled? Pitbulls do … sometimes big, huge smiles.”

Sonja Gorzkowska & Bebop

Sonja and Bebop

“I love that he’s such a loyal, loving, and fun partner in crime. Bebop constantly reminds me to kick off my shoes and play in the mud, to jump into puddles, and stop focusing on the weight life puts on my shoulders.

“He’s been through a lot in his short life but when we look at each other before tackling a mountain, I know everything we’ve been through together is worth it.”

Gorzkowska is the foster supervisor for Animal Care Centers of New York City.

Brandon Mancine & Piggy

Brandon and Piggy

“To me, she’s a reminder of how the world works; you get out what you put in. She was born into a very bad situation and found my wife and I through a rescue organization. She was skittish around us at first, but now she is the one of the most loving dogs you will ever meet.”

Tanya Turgeon & Elsie

Tanya and Elsie

“She’s SUPER friendly and funny, easy-going, loving and smart. I love how she makes every single person she meets smile and inspires everyone to be kind and happy. I love how much she has taught me about living in the present, gratitude, making the most of every moment and doing things 100% even if that thing is sleeping.

“I also love her bottom lip and how in her old age she now snores with her tongue sticking out when she sleeps. She’s one of the most agreeable dogs I’ve ever met and I’m extremely lucky to have her in my life.”

Elsie has her own Facebook page, Something Elsie.

Julia Umansky & Luna

Julia and her pitbull Luna

“Despite having been through a lot in her short life, Luna has such an amazingly sweet soul and shows it to me every day. I am so thankful that we found each other as her never-ending enthusiasm for life reminds me to live every day to the fullest! Her gentle nature comes out when she’s playing foster mom to my many foster kittens, and she’s never one to turn down a chance to cuddle.”

Umansky is the adoption supervisor for Animal Care Centers of New York City.

Great post. I loved the pictures and reading about why these owners loved their pitbulls. I loved Tanya's and Elsie's Lady and the Tramp reenactment.

Aww such an inspiring post. There's something so amazing about seeing owners with the dogs they love so dearly - and it's proof that these guys have such an unfair rep.

LOVED this post! There's something about seeing their pictures along with reading the statements that could change almost any anti-pitbull person's mind about these breeds. Spike has the cutest underbite and they all look like wonderful companions!
