My current foster dog is a tan Pomeranian mix I named Elli. I can’t tell you how cute and sweet she is. She wants to be with me at all times, and she will be a great companion for the right person. Elli gets along with my mutt Ace, and she does not bother my cats. She knows sit, shake and comes when called. She also seems to be housebroken. No dog is perfect, though, including Elli. Her main issue right now is ...

Many people are willing to provide foster homes for homeless dogs, but they have a big problem standing in their way: other family members. Either Mom won’t allow an extra dog in the house or Dad won’t allow it or the roommates are against it. Maybe the husband wants to foster a dog but his wife says no. Or maybe the girlfriend wants to foster dogs but her boyfriend says no. Living with a dog lover is a b ...

It’s difficult to turn potential foster dogs away, especially when a dog rescue group contacts me about a certain dog that needs my help or a dog that will be put down at 4 p.m. today. Fostering a dog means taking in a homeless dog while it waits for a permanent home. Although I encourage anyone to foster a dog, most of us can’t foster all the time. This is why I’ve learned to say no. When I know it ...

Our little foster dog went to her trial home today. It’s a good thing someone wanted to adopt her right away because we were starting to get attached to Sammi and wanted to keep her! Even the cats were getting used to her. Ace is walking around with his toys in his mouth happy to be an only dog again. Although he had fun with a puppy around, he will take advantage of this time to catch up on some rest. He was v ...

Our foster dog is here. Sammi is about the cutest dog I’ve ever seen. I don’t know exactly what she is mixed with, but I am guessing mostly American pit bull terrier with some smaller terrier like a Jack Russell. She seems to be all terrier to me anyway! Basically she is a tiny pitbull. She is about a third of Ace’s size and very, very skinny. She didn’t want to eat her breakfast this morning ...

I decided I’m ready to foster a dog again. More accurately, Josh didn’t say no this time when I showed him a photo of a petite “lab mix” described as “friendly with all.” She must be cat friendly, I said. We agreed to take Sammi next Monday. She needs to be transported to Fargo from an out of town shelter. She might even be adopted or taken in by a closer foster home before she get ...

Before agreeing to foster Vixen, I was informed about her issues with being in a kennel and left home alone. I know that in order to increase her chances of finding a permanent home soon, I need to work with her on kennel training. If more people would train their puppies to stay in a kennel, a lot of behavioral issues would be prevented from the start. Many people make the mistake of letting their dogs have too mu ...

This is Vixen, the pitbull we are fostering. Animal rescue programs often have limited space for dogs and depend on volunteers to provide temporary homes. Many of my posts will now be about Vixen and my attempts to improve her training and behavior in the process of finding her a home. I hope I encourage you to foster a dog, adopt a homeless dog and maybe even welcome Vixen into your family. She really is a sweet, ...
