I’ve wanted to have a dog that walks nicely on a leash without a pinch collar or Gentle Leader for a long time. So this month I am really going to crack down and spend more time working with my mutt on proper heeling. Eighty percent of the time Ace does well on a flat collar, especially when it’s just the two of us in our own neighborhood. He’s even OK with no leash at all, because it forces me to ...

…………………………………………………………………….. I am queen of exercising my dog. That is one thing I can brag about. Ace and I walk (or run) every day no matter how bad Fargo’s weather gets. We might miss one day a week on rare occasions, but it is rare. A walk is the one thi ...

On day 28 of our challenge, Ace and I went for a walk in a park he’d never been to. This park is near downtown and we were there around noon when many people were walking over their lunch breaks. This was good for Ace because it was different than most parks we go to where it’s just us and maybe a few other people. ...

Today was day one of my 30-day challenge to take my dog somewhere new every day. The goal of this challenge is to get Ace to learn to behave in new places, mostly to control his excitement levels. The challenge is also a way to continue working on heeling and basic obedience. For our first day, Ace and I walked in a different part of the neighborhood. This was a really simple way to go somewhere new on a day when I d ...

About a month and a half ago, I challenged myself and others to walk our dogs every day for 30 days. Thirty days is a reasonable amount of time to realistically do something every day. After those 30 days, it is easy for whatever I’m doing to become a habit. It’s a nice way to make a change. So, I have come up with a new challenge, to bring ...

My mutt had quite the fascination with squirrels today. He was walking just fine off leash at my side (because he was tired from wearing his dog backpack on a 3-mile run). But he bolted after a squirrel two times at the park. I had to put his leash back on and walk purposely ...

My mutt has a few issues with acting overly excited. He cries in the car. He is obsessed with his tennis ball. He whines if we’re visiting someone’s house and he’s feeling nervous. If we visit his favorite parks, he drools excessively and starts looking for a stick immediately. If we visit my parents, all his training seems to be forgotten as he pushes through the door knocking people out of his way ...

Yesterday was the final day of my 30-day challenge to walk Ace every day. The challenge was a success, and I plan on creating more challenges for Ace and I. However there were difficulties. Time was the biggest problem for me. Walking Ace does not tire him out as fast as running, ball playing or going to the park, so I sometimes didn’t have enough time to give him more exercise other than our walk. In our case, ...
