It does not surprise me that some dogs actually injure themselves from wagging their tail too hard. During my days ...

Note: This is a guest post from Apryl DeLancey, who writes the blog “Women Like Sports.” Yes, this post is about cats, but if you’re like me, you probably own a dog and a cat. Yeah, not only is my kitty named Freako, but he walks on a leash! It really was a natural progression from his lifetime of ...

I began walking dogs last fall at the Natural Pet Center in Fargo, which also keeps dogs from the 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. The sad thing is, although I haven’t been there since Thanksgiving, some of the same dogs still sit there, waiting to be walked every day. These dogs waited in their kennels all winter, getting out for a few short walks here and there. Take Georgia, for example. She is a pitbull mix who was sav ...

Ace has been responding well to treats on our 20-minute walks. He will heel with his regular collar or with no leash as long as no other people or dogs are in sight. Of course, if he sees another dog, he wants to run and greet. He ...

Last weekend I took care of Piper, my friend Becky’s great dane. I wanted to show a picture of her because I had never seen a gray and black (blue merle) great dane before Piper. Piper reminds me of how some of the American Kennel Club’s regulations are a bit ridiculous. The AKC recognizes the great dane in the following colors: brindle, black-masked fawn, blue (solid gray), black, harlequin (white with ...

When dogs used for fighting are taken out of their abusive situations, they should be given a chance to live a normal life. According to CNN, 47 pit bulls were taken from property owned by Michael Vick. All the dogs went to animal rehabilitation centers. The hope is that with time, some of them will be able to be adopted and learn what life is like as a loved pet. Many of these dogs are living in Utah at Best Friends ...

Training your dog at all is more important than what kind of obedience training you and your dog actually do. Think about all the dogs you know. How many of them are actually trained well? How many have had any training at all? That alone should motivate you to train your dog better. When it comes to training your dog, you basically have four options. You can train the dog yourself, take her to a group class, me ...

Today was the second day of my experiment to walk Ace every day. Since it is really wet and muddy out, he did not get a chance to run today. His walk was his only exercise, so we went for two 20-minute walks, and he wore his dog backpack filled with some books. Ace ...

When I adopted Ace last year, I debated whether or not to take him to formal obedience classes. I am always trying to save money, so one question I asked myself was “Why pay for training when I know how to train him myself?” My boyfriend, Josh, said, “Does he even need it?” This made me want to prove I could train Ace myself even more. But we were not looking at the situation the best way. Any ...
