Remy’s Energy

Some people tell me my dog Remy will settle down eventually, and … what they’re saying is fine. I know he’s obnoxious. His energy and immaturity are shocking to most, even to “dog people.”

So I try to hold him back, most of the time … but I don’t really mind that he’s “wild” …

Because one day my dog will grow old, and that’s if he’s lucky enough to make it to 9, 10 or 11. And I will miss these days.

I love Remy’s exuberance and how he does not take me seriously. I love his joy, goofiness and excitement about life!

Remy thinks being a dog is awesome! He reminds me to crash up mountains, to climb, play and joke around. Why be so serious?

I smile when he goes nuts around visitors and when he races up the trail with 110 percent effort! Or when he refuses to sit, stay, give up his toys or come back to me.

Someday my dog might not be able to keep up on the trails. So today is special. For a flash, right NOW, we get to be young together.

But time does not sit still.

So we will go for a run. And we will walk with and sit with our favorite people and dogs.

We’ll give the world our best.

“He’ll settle down,” they say.

Maybe. For now, let’s just enjoy today.

“For nearly their whole lives, we try to hold them back, try to stop their pulling. Then, in their final years, we just wish they’d pull, pull again.” -Me

This article brings tears to my eyes! Just brings back so many memories of our beloved Shanna. We were lucky to have her in our lives for 17+ years. She was always full of spunk!! Loved running, jumping and dancing to the music. She even loved the occasional beer LOL!! I think that's whats best about having these fur babies in our life, they remind us to just live and just love. Who cares about rules right?? You only live once !!!

Thank you for this. I have a 4 year old lurcher who's still bonkers and full of life and pulls me along... I'm reminded now to enjoy every minute of it, because he won't be young forever (I feel like he'll always be bonkers though).

I agree whole heartedly, let them be idiots for a bit lol!! Let them just be dogs, I too, will miss the younger abnoxious years. My Ollie is 5 now and he’s already changed, he’s a bit slower and not as firstly as his new 2yr old sister Sara. I hope she can help keep him playful and young feeling

I am the proud Mom of a very active 1 yr old German Shorthaired Pointer. It's uncanny how your description of Remy's personality totally fits my Jemma. Before Jemma came along, life dealt me a number of cruel blows. The only thing that kept me going was the waiting and preparing for a new puppy. Jemma greets the dawn of each morning in the same exuberant manner and keeps me going all day. I sometimes wonder what just hit me but she makes me laugh more than I can ever get perturbed with her. Thank you for the reminder of the importance of being in the NOW and just enjoy TODAY because before you know it we'll be looking back at yesterday. With Jemma in my life my yesterdays will look pretty good too. Keep up your good articles!
