Campfire Natural Dog Treats Review – Hearty Bites

Campfire Natural Dog Treats "Hearty Bites"

What I think of the “Hearty Bites” from Campfire Natural Dog Treats

My dog Remy loves the Hearty Bites, and I know these are healthy treats made with the best ingredients. I use them for training Remy to come when called, drop his toys and work on tricks.

I also use the Hearty Bites to reward him for good behavior. For example, I keep a jar on my desk and when he politely shares his dog bed with my cat, I toss Remy a treat. Just a reminder to all of us that we need to reinforce good behavior with our dogs. Training is ongoing.

Here are some of the reasons Campfire Natural Dog Treats are top quality and a good choice for all dogs:

1. The treats are made with the best ingredients

The Hearty Bites from Campfire Natural Dog Treats are made with one ingredient, 100% U.S. beef heart.

The meat is selected from U.S. farms and then hand cut and dehydrated in the company’s kitchen in California. You can read more details about how the treats are sourced and made here.

Campfire Natural Dog Treats, Hearty Bites

Campfire Treats said on its website that it never adds anything artificial. The treats contain no additives, colors, fillers or preservatives. They are also free of grain, gluten, corn and soy.

In addition to the Hearty Bites training treats, some of the company’s other products include:

2. Selective process for making the treats

The ingredients are not “just” human-grade quality, said the company’s co-founder Marko Wittich. Campfire Natural Dog Treats is highly selective when choosing which U.S. farms and fisheries to work with.

“We buy and produce in small batches,” he said. “This means everything is super fresh.”

This gives Campfire Treats control over quality from the moment the ingredients arrive in its kitchen to the time the products are finished, it explains on its website.

All the treats and chews are handcrafted in the company’s kitchen in Rocklin, Calif.

3. Designed for training & convenience

The brand’s training treats are purposely cut small for training and they are not greasy or crumbly.

This means you can carry them in your pocket without a problem. And because of their small size, you can quickly pop one into your dog’s mouth as a reward and he’s not going to spend time chewing it as you move on with your training session.

Another benefit is these treats do not have an odor, yet they are still very tasty and interesting to dogs! Remy is very motivated by the Hearty Bites.

(The company also makes jerky strips and chews in addition to its small training treats.)

What is the cost? Plus a coupon code!

On the Campfire Treats website, a jar of the Hearty Bites treats are $14.98 for a 3.5-ounce jar.

Higher-quality dog treats are going to cost more than average. The Hearty Bites also do not contain excess moisture because they have been dehydrated. Therefore, each 3.5-ounce jar has over 100 treats and will last you quite a while.

Why the name Campfire Natural Dog Treats?

I asked Wittich how he chose the name of his company. He said they were looking for something with a strong link to “nature” since the treats are made without additives or preservatives.

“We love roasted marshmallows, but a campfire treat can go far beyond sweets,” he said. “Imagine an evening after a day hike in the mountains or being at the beach after a day on the boat, or wherever you love to spend time outdoors, sitting at a campfire watching the sun set.”

He said to picture a friend, your dog and some simple food, maybe a bottle of wine.

“Picture the scene, imagine the mood – totally submerged in nature,” he said. “This is the TRUE campfire treat. This is what we had in mind when we, in fact my wife, came up with the name.”

I could certainly relate to that as one of the reasons I love dogs is because they get me out into nature:

Pros of the Hearty Bites treats from Campfire Natural Dog Treats:

  • Made with 100% U.S. beef heart (one ingredient)
  • 68% crude protein (according to package), 5% crude fat, just 18% moisture
  • No additives or preservatives
  • Not greasy and not crumbly (can carry in your pocket)
  • Contains no salt, sugar, gluten, soy, wheat, corn (just meat!)
  • Made, sourced and packaged in USA
  • Small bites for training

I recommend the company’s Hearty Bites treats for training because they are not greasy and you can keep them directly in your pocket.

They are also a good choice if you are a raw feeder and you’re looking for a “raw” treat for training and snacks. These treats are made from dehydrated raw beef heart.

Cons:

  • You pay more for top quality treats, of course
  • If you really wanted to, you could make your own dehydrated beef heart treats

These might not be for you if they’re out of your budget or if you prefer to make dehydrated treats yourself. However, they still might make a great treat for your dog every now and then.

I am curious Lindsay. How long did Remy pose next to that bottle of treats? My nine month old Weim. would of been up and gone, with treat container in jaws, playing catch me if you can as soon as I stepped back to snap the picture. I am sure he would love them. All $14.98 worth at once if he could.

Haha, it can be a challenge! I usually have more treats in my hand and he knows he gets those every few seconds as I'm repeating "stay, leave it, stay, leave it." Haha.

My 3 dogs would love these. I am in the process of training my 7 1/2 month old Weimaraner, beagle, jack russel mix pup to heel and not dart back and forth and so she can keep from getting run into by my power wheelchair

Those anchovy treats seem like a great way to get more Omega-3s and -6s into my dog's diet!
