Nylabone Product Recalled for Salmonella; No Dogs Confirmed Sick

A company called Nylabone issued a voluntary recall on one of its products due to potential salmonella.

The specific product is called the “Puppy Starter Kit” and contains three chews, according to the company.

Nylabone provided a picture of the specific product, shown below.

This is a voluntary recall, just for precaution. The company said “less than 3,000 pieces” were affected.

I have not been able to find any confirmed cases of dogs getting sick from the Puppy Starter Kit chews. That’s zero dogs. I will update if I learn otherwise, and I reached out to Nylabone for further comments.

What Nylabone is saying about the recall

Nylabone said on its web site:

It was during one of our many quality control tests that we identified a small lot of Puppy Starter Kits with a dog chew that tested positive for salmonella.

The positive test was from one single lot (LT 21935), a small number of less than 3000 pieces of Nylabone Puppy Starter Kits made in our facilities in Neptune City, New Jersey. No other Nylabone products were affected.

As always, some dog owners are over reacting

You’ve probably seen the warnings going around on social media if you follow enough dog-related accounts.

[quote_right]Salmonella is generally not harmful to healthy dogs …[/quote_right]Sure, you should take some precautions if you’ve purchased these specific chews from Nylabone. If not, no need to worry. Nylabone said on its web site that none of its other products are affected.

Salmonella is generally not harmful to healthy dogs anyway. Dogs can handle more bacteria than people can. It’s actually the humans who need to be (slightly) cautious.

But honestly, shouldn’t we rinse our hands after handling all dog toys anyway? 🙂 See my post on dogs and salmonella for more details.

What to do if you purchased the Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit

If you purchased the Puppy Starter Kit, I’d just toss the chews.

Nylabone said on its web site customers can return them for a refund if they’d like.

According to Nylabone, here are the details of the specific product affected:

Item number: N201PSKP
UPC: 0-18214-81291-3
Lot number: LT21935

I’m a fan of Nylabone’s products

Nylabone Dura Chew for strong chewers

My Lab mix Ace has always chewed on Nylabone products.

I don’t buy the edible products from Nylabone. I buy the nonedible chew bones because they are one of few products Ace will actually chew for an extended period of time.

Each bone lasts him about a year. I throw them away once they start to get frayed on the ends because I don’t want him to eat the tiny pieces that could come off.

The blog Keep the Tail Wagging has an informative post here on some of the risks involved when dogs eat non-edible chews.

Personally, I will continue to buy products from Nylabone with no worries.

The product I normally buy for Ace is called the Dura Chew (affiliate link). And I’m sorry, but I can’t resist joking that all the Nylabone products pretty much look like dildos. I mean, come on. It’s true!

How about you? Do you purchase Nylabone products?

Mom won't buy Nylabones. She tried them several times and each time they were crunched into little pieces in no time. She doesn't like how artificial they seem either. Many pet parents love them, so I hope they fix their issues, but we won't have them in our house.

We use Nylabones at our house too. And toys with no stuffing.... :-) Its so funny to see D.O.G. with Aeon's bone, and she looks at him and me like, Mom, make him give it back! I do watch with him because of the size difference in their bones. So far, she has not found his appealing, which would also be funny.

One of our local stores had a soft rubber bone that I'm liking, while its not as indestructable as the nylabones it can be thrown in the house, dropped on the hard wood, and stepped on in the middle of the night without hurting the humans...

Nice! I have a rubber bones from Kong that Ace will chew on. He can't destroy it, but I'm sure some dogs can!
