At age 3, my mutt is not really a pup anymore but a young adult. I looked up Ace’s age in dog years, and according to the chart below he is 30 years old.
The age calculation chart takes into consideration the dog’s size (Ace is large), and how dogs develop much quicker in the first two years of their lives.
The chart puts all dogs at about 24 years old in dog years once they reach the actual age of 2. Beyond that, you add a certain number per year depending on the dog’s size. Add five per year for small and medium dogs, six for large dogs and seven for extra large dogs.
After 10 years, a Chihuahua would be 64, a lab 72 and a great dane 80. The chart seems pretty accurate to me.
Going by that, my mutt and I are about the closet in age we will ever get – me 26 this month and him around 30. From here on out, he will be getting further and further from me in age.

Walk your dog 101 miles (day 6)
Today Ace and I did a timed 3-mile run. My goal was 27 minutes – 9 minute miles.
It’s when I set out for a run that I know what kind of mood I’ll be in for the day. Those first few steps determine what kind of run I’m going to have, and often what kind of day it’s going to be. Excited about a new week and an upcoming trip to Lake Superior I easily completed the first mile in 8:30.
I focused on my breathing, something I realized I’d forgotten about for the past 10 months or so. In “The Complete Book on Running for Women,” Claire Kowalchik recommends breathing in for three steps and then breathing out for two steps. This rotates what foot you will be on when you take a new breath as a way to spread out the stress on each side of your body equally.
This is the same reason why swimmers rotate which side they breathe on, breathing every 3, 5 or 7 strokes instead of every other or every fourth stroke. It also helps build equal muscle strength on each side of the body and prevents them from leaning in one direction – something that can add time during a race.
Subtle changes like these seem minute, but it’s the small differences that prevent injuries. The small things add up when you’re running 10, 30 or 100 miles in a week.
Ace was the only factor slowing me down today, and that’s what got me thinking about his age. It’s not that he was slow, it’s just that he was holding to our usual 10-minute mile pace, and I was trying to speed things up.
It’s not every day that I can run a leash length in front of my dog. I was proud of this and wanted to turn and say, “Who’s pulling who now, huh?”
Instead, I kept the leash loose, held back some as he has done for me so many times, and offered vocal encouragement. “Good boy! What a good boy!”
When we reached the second mile point, I handed off my mittens to Ace, a job he takes very seriously. The responsibility gave him renewed energy, and we made it back home in 26:05. We walked a minute or two, for a total of 3.05 miles.

This scale would make Pickles about 22 years old in human years – she’ll be 2 in late August. We also did 3 miles today, but you did yours a lot quicker!
This was interesting! I’ve been calling Sheba a teenager lately and according the the chart, she would be around 12 (going on 13 this month). Dennis Mugu is not as old as I thought he’d be: with his nine years, that makes him about 66. Still fit enough to do laps with Sheba, lol!
