How do I stop my briard from barking in the car while I am driving….at dogs or people?????
You have have a few options. You could try reinforcing a down-stay where the dog must always remain lying down in the car. This is difficult to enforce while you are driving, but if you have someone else in the car, they could reinforce it. Whenever you drive by dogs or people and she doesn’t bark, give her small pieces of jerky treats. If she is lying down and staying she should be calmer and less likely to notice ppl and dogs.
Another option is to distract her with goodies such as a Kong toy filled with peanut butter. The goal would be for her to chew on the toy rather than focus on dogs and people.
And a third option to consider is an e-collar. Either get an anti-bark collar that automatically gives a vibration correction when a dog barks, or get one with a remote so that you control the correction. Continue giving treats as a reward the second the dog is quiet.
Hello, I’m loving your site. My german shepherd puppy is going to be three months in a week. When should I start training her to heel, and other basic commands. Or do you think she’s too young. Do you think there’s an age that makes most sense to train her?
Start right away! Just keep the sessions short – three minutes here and there. I would start making her heel now. You don’t want her to get in the habit of pulling out in front. She will be a big, powerful dog very soon. Start making her sit before she eats, plays, gets a toy and so on. Work on stay for a few seconds and build from there once she understands sit.
