The online pet pharmacy 1-800-PetMeds said it will donate $2,000 to an adoptable pet’s surgery or medical treatment.

First, it’s asking for your help choosing a pet in need through a contest called Change a Pet’s Life.

The contest goes along with Change a Pet’s Life Day, which is Jan. 24.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition started Change a Pet’s Life Day in 2009 to encourage more people to adopt, according to PetMeds.

How to vote in the Change a Pet’s Life contest

The voting is happening now through Jan. 22 and anyone 18 or older can vote once per day, including non-U.S. residents, according to PetMeds. Nominations took place earlier this month.

When you visit the voting page, you can click on any of the entries to view a detailed description of that pet’s story.

The winner will be announced Jan. 23.

The prizes

1st place: PetMeds will pay up to $2,000 towards the winning pet’s surgery or medical treatment. It will also share a video of that pet’s rescue group or shelter on the PetMeds web site.

2nd place: The company will sponsor the adoption costs of five pets from this shelter or rescue.

3rd place: A $250 donation towards the pet’s medical treatment or surgery.

The first- and third-place prizes will be donated to the winning pets’ veterinarians or animal hospitals to help cover the pets’ medical costs, according to PetMeds.

What a great thing petmeds is doing! I voted for a cattle dog with a dislocated hip, because his story reminded me of my own dog (I'm such a sentimental sop, hah!)
