It’s time for another 30-day challenge. This one is different than previous challenges, because there won’t be a whole lot to say about my progress. That’s why I want all of you to participate and walk 50 or 100 miles with your dog in March. Think you can do it? All you have to do is keep track of how far you and your dog walk (or run) in the next 31 days. Hey, if you don’t live in the tundra ...

When Kodiak tore a muscle in his back leg, it cost the Siberian husky’s owners $10,000 to fix. That included the initial vet visit, anesthesia, x-rays and surgery. Megan Casto ended up paying for the treatment out of pocket. Well, with credit cards. “It was not an easy thing to pay for it, but we didn’t even question whether or not we’d get him fixed up,” she said. Megan maintains the bl ...

There is a male pit bull terrier in one of the Fargo-area pounds scheduled to be euthanized soon if no one saves him today (Tuesday). 02/25/09 edit: The pitbull was saved and has a foster home lined up! The fact that this dog is a pitbull means his chances of being rescued are slim even though he has done well around other dogs and is a manageable 40 pounds. With my close connections with dog rescue groups, I become ...

Before you meet a local pet sitter, make sure you take plenty of time to plan ahead. Don’t wait until right before you leave for a trip. You will be rushed and will settle for the first option. All the professionals might be full if it’s a holiday or weekend, and you might be stuck staying home or hiring a neighbor kid to walk your rottweiler – probably not the best idea. Instead, take your time and ...

I will never pay a “re-homing fee” to an individual giving up his dog. Of course, I would pay an adoption fee to adopt a dog from a shelter, humane society, pound or rescue group, but I won’t pay an individual. Since pets are property, everyone seems OK with the idea that dogs and cats should be sold. Apparently even a bad owner deserves $100 for realizing he doesn’t deserve his dog. Just sear ...

I was emailed this list of 100 ways to help a dog rescue group. Thank you, Lori! It’s a good list full of ways to help rescue dogs. If you are unable or unwilling to foster a dog, there are tons of other ways you can help. So browse through the list and let me know if you have any other ideas. I came up with a few more ideas to help dog rescue groups: 1. Take a dog for a run. Dogs living in shelters or boarding ...

The debate goes on about whether it’s better to buy a dog from a breeder or to adopt a shelter dog. But many of us adopt dogs from other people – dogs that aren’t in the best homes or dogs that are “handed over to us.” I found my mutt Ace through Adopt A Pet of Fargo Moorhead. His original owner was doing her best to find a new owner for “Junior” with the help of the rescue group. Once I took the ...

Should you hire a local pet sitter? Schedules are busy, making it hard to meet the tight pick-up and drop-off hours of boarding kennels. Some dogs can’t handle the stress and noise of a busy kennel, and some aren’t welcome because of aggression or their breed. Friends and family members probably don’t want to deal with your animals while you’re away either. Trusting your dogs with a professi ...

My mutt Ace has developed a barking habit. I credit that to me slacking off in training him and not giving my dog enough exercise. Ace sometimes barks in the kennel, he barks wildly at agility, he barks at the door and he barks when I leave him in the car. These are all problems he developed within the last eight months. All of these issues need to be addressed in their own way, but I am focusing on getting my dog ...

A “pitbull” is not an actual breed of dog. Usually the word “pitbull” refers to the American pit bull terrier or the American Staffordshire terrier. However, many breeds or mixed breeds are dubbed with the “pit” name incorrectly. The term slaps together anything resembling or related to the American pit bull terrier. It would be like calling a golden retriever a lab. Some of the ...
