Note: This is a guest post from Rachel at The Dog Training Secret. The site offers information on topics such as leash training and dog barking. Using strictly positive reinforcement dog training is not what I would use in most cases. However, everyone is different and what works for me and my dog is not always right for everyone.
Dogs usually jump up on people because they are trying to get up to the human’s level to either plant a wet one on us or just get our eye contact. An easy way to stop jumping is to get down on the dog’s level when you approach and pet them calmly. Depending on the height of the dog and your physical activity level, you can kneel, sit or bend down.
If you have a persistent jumper, then every time your puppy or dog jumps up on you, the minute their paws touch your legs, sharply turn around and say nothing. If your dog jumps up while you are kneeling or sitting, stand up quickly and turn around. Your dog will usually walk around to face you and try jumping up again. If so, sharply turn around again and say nothing to the dog. If the dog jumps up at the back of your legs instead of the front, simply take a single step forward at a time until the dog stops.
It’s extremely important to say nothing to your dog so he receives absolutely no attention. Even though it may be unintentional if you are reprimanding your dog verbally for jumping up on you, you’re actually reinforcing the behavior by giving the dog negative attention which is just what he wants, for you to pay attention to him!
Once your dog stops jumping up and either stands still looking at you or sits for at least 3 seconds, praise in a high-pitched happy voice and scratch your dog’s favorite spot, whether it be her hindquarters, her belly or her chin. Repeat as necessary until your dog completely stops jumping every time she sees you. Ask all house guests to do the same thing and try to warn them before they come over that you are trying to curb your dog’s jumping habit so it’s important that they follow the same protocol you do.

I find that one of my dogs won’t jump up on me, but every now and then will jump up on other people, especially if they are taking a treat out of their pocket. They usually pet him, which doesn’t help!
Most dogs will jump. I’m lucky to have a dog that for whatever reason has never jumped unless he is enthusiastically told “up!” It’s a hard habit to get rid of, especially since most dogs are actually rewarded for jumping. It’s hard not to give them attention for it.

I have a thick headed APBT that just does not seem to get it no matter how much turning and stepping away you do! Of course I feel spoiled because the Rottweiler was such an easy trainee.
Sounds like you need to do something more than just positive reinforcement. Try some of these ideas: http://www.thatmutt.com/2010/04/11/how-to-stop-a-dog-from-jumping/
