Black dogs are popular!

What’s your favorite type of black dog?

It makes no sense to me when shelters say the black dogs are “unwanted” or “the last to get adopted.” I don’t believe it.

My black Lab mix Ace

Black dogs are popular! Practically every breed comes in a black variety, and it’s no surprise my Mutt Calendar features a couple of “big, black dogs.” Lots of people have black dogs.

Have you ever owned one? Was color a factor in your choice?

I hate to admit it, but when I was looking for a dog, I “knew” I wasn’t interested in a black Lab mix. That would be too “ordinary.”

Luckily, I paid attention to what really mattered – energy and temperament. I was able to overlook my future dog’s “boring” appearance.

And now?

Black dogs are my favorites! They catch my eyes before others, and my favorite breed is definitely the “big, black Lab mix.” The smooth-coated variety, with a touch of white. 🙂

So in honor of black dogs everywhere, anyone who buys a calendar from me today will be entered into a drawing to win a second calendar as a gift. Ten percent of all sales will be donated to the Nevada Humane Society, a no-kill shelter. There is free shipping on calendars all week, and you can order them here.

Do you own a black dog? What is your favorite type of black dog?

I own a medium black terrier mix named Rue. When I first saw a picture of her online, I was pretty indifferent. Photos don't do a dog any justice! Good thing we went to go see her at an adoption event. :) I don't think black dogs are unwanted. If anything, they're hard to capture good photos of to draw initial interest. My husband and I joke that Rue is not photogenic. She pretty much has to be looking directly into the sun in order for us to get any good pictures of her, and then she's squinty eyed. Otherwise she kind of looks like a blob with a tongue. :)

Those black lab mutts have always been my favorites. I have 3 of them now, black lab/ border collie mixes. My favorite dog to board is a black lab, especially the old english type. That is the one dog, I don't even have to meet before boarding, their temperament is so reliable. It's funny, I have noticed a lab litter can contain all 3 colors, and each color has a different temperament. The yellow ones a little crazier, the black ones are more mellow, and the chocolate ones, somewhere in between. Any one else notice that?

Interesting observation on the different energy levels. I haven't really noticed it either way.

I've had three black dogs in my history, not including the black dogs my mom had growing up. I especially remember her Lady and Max. My 2nd dog ever was a black Lab/Border Collie mix. I named him Smokey. Then I had Sheba, a very small Rottie mix. And finally, there was Sephi, a Chow/Shepherd/Lab/Border Collie mix.

Sephi was such a pretty girl.
