I can’t say why I love animals.
When I sit down at my desk to write a blog post, my mutt Ace rests at my feet, patiently waiting for a walk. My cat Scout is usually in the room too, perched on the file cabinet staring at me or nestled in a favorite hiding place. He occasionally jumps in my lap just to say hi. If I get up for some water or to make lunch, they both follow. Then we all return to our usual places.
People love dogs and cats for common reasons. They make us smile. They are loyal. They don’t talk too much. They appear to be listening and understanding. Perhaps they fill a need other humans can’t offer us. They see us at our best and our worst, and always, they are happy to see us.
In an increasingly busy, unstable world where it’s harder to maintain close relationships, our pets are constant. The predictable parts of my day involve my dog: We will walk together in the morning. I will spend time with him during my dinner break, and he will greet me at the door after work. Later, he will sleep beside my bed. In the morning, I will wake up to Scout pawing my face or Ace resting his head on my pillow.
It’s the simple things, really, that I love about my pets. A nap on the couch, playing fetch in the park or a game of tag after a stressful day. They don’t ask for much. They want companionship, routine and most often, food. And they offer me so much in return. Some people can live without pets, but I need mine to live happily.

This is a lovely sentiment. I feel exactly the same about my dog. What’s the occasional chewed shoe when compared to the warm feeling I get from caring for her?

I have always had a dog, can’t imagine not having one…the fact my son turned out to be a cat-person amazes me…
Probably for all the reasons you have said, mainly companionship be that at home, driving or long walks. I can’t imagine living in a home without an animal, not sure I trust people who don’t have pets…lol

Our Dogs, a poem by David Jeffrey
A love uncontested, without compromise,
is what we see when we look into our lovely pets
eyes.
The way they adore us, with love to no end,
is the reason we call them Man’s bestfriend.
With tails a wagging and affection to spare,
makes them so easy to cuddle despite all their hair.
We treat them like children and adorn them with toys
trust that they will play and protect,
our own girls and boys.
God gave us dogs so that we may know,
the unconditional love,
that only a pet can show.
